Markell-Bani is the brainchild of two local visionaries, Gregory Markell Lawrence and Sean Bani Yisrael. The two decided to create a wine brand that embraced African-American culture, while maintaining elements and character loved by traditional wine drinkers. Their passion for fine wine and discovering that the wine industry has historically overlooked the African-American community, led to the formation of Markell-Bani. The Markell-Bani story began with two men, Gregory Markell and Sean Bani, who had dream of starting a business together. One day while conversing over dinner with their families, the waiter asked if they would like to try a class of wine. As the waiter poured classes for the adults at the table, Greg asked Sean if he knew of any African-American owned wine companies. Sean couldn’t recall knowing any and they went back to discussing their previous subject.A few days later, Greg called Sean with an idea of starting a wine company. After the night at the restaurant he did a little research and learned about the process of making wine. The idea caught Sean’s interest. They would have many conversations about wine making thereafter. They created a shared vision of having a wine company that symbolized class, prestige, style, and dignity. They didn’t want to be like the stereotypical alcohol companies that are generally associated in the African-American community. Greg and Sean took an entire year learning all they could about wine making. They went to various wine tastings in the Mid-west and West Coast. Also, they spent a lot of time in the library reading tons of books on the subject. Their diligence led them to a small micro-winery located in Southwest Ohio, where they began to produce their first varietal. While their first batch of wine was fermenting, they decided to come up with a name – one that would represent their aura they wanted to create for the wine. Two entire weeks went by and they couldn’t agree on a suitable name. One day, Sean contacted Greg with the idea of using their middle names – Markell-Bani. The two agreed and moved forward with their vision.In order to spread the word about their wines, Greg and Sean independently hosted their own wine tasting, and went to various establishments asking for the chance to sell their wines. Their hard work paid off because during their first year of business, they were able to successfully get five businesses to carry their varietals. At the beginning of their first year, Markell-Bani Fine Wines sold an average of five cases of wine per month. By the end of that same year, the company was selling an average of fifteen cases per month. Before the end of year two, the company had blossomed to 25 cases per month. This was all done within a distributor. Greg and Sean manufactured, produced, and distributed their wines.In 2009, Markell-Bani began selling its wine from Bigg’s Grocery Stores. This was a major step up for Greg and Sean. The Bigg’s deal would mean increased accessibility for the company’s growing fan base. It would also mean greater demand on the owners, who controlled all aspects of the company independently. This forced them to seek out a winery that could not only make a quality product, but one that could produce at a higher volume than what Greg and Sean could do alone. Their search led them to Sonoma County, California where some of the best wines in the country are made. They were able to establish a partnership with a winery with incredibly high standard, and who was also able to improve upon the varietals Greg and Sean made while in Ohio. Now the future looks bright for Markell-Bani. Greg and Sean are looking to secure a deal with a major distributor, take the company into markets outside of Ohio, and expand by producing more varietals and Champaign as well. Markell-Bani is a brand that both novice and experienced wine drinks will love. And just like their slogan says, they have the right wine for the right occasion.
